Chemguide: Support for CIE A level Chemistry
Learning outcome 12.4(a)
This statement is about stereoisomerism in complexes.
Before you go on, you should find and read the statement in your copy of the syllabus.
You should read the second half of the page about shapes of complexes. If you aren't sure about stereoisomerism, then you should follow the link to isomerism in organic compounds in the red box before you start.
Once you are sure that you understand the formation of stereoisomers in complexes in principle, make certain that you can draw diagrams showing the actual ions [Ni(NH2CH2CH2NH2)3]2+ and [Cr(C2O4)3]3- mentioned on the page.
The structures of these ligands are shown on the introductory page on complex ions which you probably looked at when you were reading the page about shapes.
You can find a question about this in the specimen papers for the new syllabus from the CIE website (link via the Section 12 Menu). It is Q3 from specimen paper 4. Check you answer with the mark scheme.
