Chemguide: Support for CIE A level Chemistry

Learning outcome 29: An introduction to A level organic chemistry

29.2: Characteristic organic reactions

Learning outcome 29.2.1

This statement covers two new mechanism terms that you will meet in this part of the course - electrophilic substitution and addition-elimination.

I have no intention of explaining these words at this stage. I could only do that by talking about reactions which wouldn't mean anything to you at the moment. That is confusing when you won't know any of the chemistry involved.

What I suggest you do is to make a note of them now, and then add a quick description of what each word means with an example of its use as you come across it during the course. That would be quite useful for revision purposes later.
