Chemguide: Support for CIE A level Chemistry Learning outcome 9.1(d) This statement looks at how the first ionisation energies of the elements vary as you go across Period 3 of the Periodic Table from sodium to argon. Before you go on, you should find and read the statements in your copy of the syllabus. This is a good time to revise what you know about ionisation energies from Section 2 of the syllabus. I suggest that you start by re-reading the whole of the page on ionisation energies - including the bits that aren't directly relevant to Period 3. While you are doing this, notice the chart showing the first ionisation energies of the elements up to calcium. This is a good example of periodicity, showing repeating patterns in Periods 2 and 3. Then read the beginning of the page on atomic and physical properties of period 3 elements down as far as (but not including) atomic radius.
