Chemguide: Support for CIE A level Chemistry

Learning outcome 33: Carboxylic acids and derivatives

33.3: Acyl chlorides

Learning outcome 33.3.1

This statement is about making acyl chlorides from carboxylic acids. You will find the syllabus statement is fairly specific about what you need.

The statement is a repeat of statement 33.1.2.

You will find this on the page about converting carboxylic acids to acyl chlorides.

Notice that the syllabus expects you to heat the reaction with PCl3, and that isn't mentioned on the page you have just read.

CIE's preferred method in the past was using sulphur dichloride oxide (thionyl chloride) because the other products are gases, and so purification is easier. That may change because the new syllabus is more precise about what they want.
