Chemguide: Support for CIE A level Chemistry

Learning outcome 8.1

Reaction kinetics

Rate of reaction

Statement 8.1.2

This statement is about the effect of concentration and pressure on rates of reaction. This particular statement doesn't involve any calculations; those are reserved for later statements in the second half of a two year course.

Before you go on, you should find and read the statement in your copy of the syllabus.

You will find the effect of concentration explained on the page about the effect of concentration on rates of reaction. In this page, and other pages you will read, where I talk about collisions, the word "effective" is always implied.

Now read the page about the effect of pressure on rates of reaction.

You will find that the pressure page is almost a repetition of the concentration page in places. You aren't likely to need the bit about pV=nRT, but you do need to know that pressure has an effect because it changes the concentration of substances in the gas.
